Edexcel Certificate in Adult Numeracy

Course Objectives

The Certificate in Adult is Numeracy has been designed to enable learners to:

• Develop and use numeracy skills at a level to function at work, and in society in general
• Progress to the next level in small, manageable steps
• Become better qualified.

Target groups

This programme is suitable for learners who:

• Have missed out on learning essential numeracy skills in the past
• Have learning difficulties
• Wish to progress into employment or education.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific requirements.

Structure of the course

This course is offered at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2. At each level the learners will learn about:

• Handling Data

• Number
• Measures, Shape and Space

Each component, at each level, consists of one unit which is assessed by means of a unit test.

I. Entry Level

The entry level is sub-divided into Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. Learners must handling data, numbers, shape and space at each entry sub-level to obtain the full entry level Certificate in Adult Numeracy.

Entry Level 1

The Entry level 1 is made up of 5 units covering numbers, handling data, measures, shape and space

Unit 1: At the office

Unit 2: In the town centre

Unit 3: A busy life!

Unit 4: What’s in store?

Unit 5: A load of rubbish

Entry Level 2

The Entry level 2 is made up of 5 units covering numbers, handling data, measures, shape and space.

Unit 1: Playing with numbers

Unit 2: Fundraising

Unit 3: Right on time

Unit 4: Allotments, gardens and garden centres

Unit 5: Working in a garage

Entry Level 3

The Entry level 3 is made up of 5 units covering numbers, handling data, measures, shape and space

Unit 1: In the warehouse

Unit 2: Making ends meet

Unit 3: At the leisure centre

Unit 4: Nursing in the community

Unit 5: The animal shelter

II. Level 1

The Level 1 is made up of 6 units covering numbers, handling data, measures, shape and space. Learners must handling data, numbers, shape and space to obtain the Level 1 Certificate in Adult Numeracy.

Unit 2: The cost of driving

Unit 3: Time to go

Unit 4: Garden makeover

Unit 5: Television viewing

Unit 6: Taking a chance

III. Level 2

The Level 2 is made up of 6 units covering numbers, handling data, measures, shape and space. Learners must handling data, numbers, shape and space to obtain the Level 1 Certificate in Adult Numeracy.

Unit 1: Running a nursery

Unit 2: Broadening horizons

Unit 3: My delivery job

Unit 4: Gardening

Unit 5: A picture of health

Unit 6:  What chance?

Assessment

All learners will:

• take an initial screening test to determine their numeracy profile
• a diagnostic assessment to identify specific skills to be developed
• undergo formative assessment to monitor progress towards the achievement of the required skills, using individual learning plans that are regularly reviewed.
• undergo summative assessments externally set by Edexcel examination Board.

Progression

Learners who successfully complete the adult numeracy certificate at Entry level will progress to Level 1, and subsequently Level 2. Learners may also progress onto a key skill programme, study for a GCSE, or other relevant qualifications.
