Edexcel Entry Level Certificate in Adult ICT (Skills for Life)
This programme is suitable for learners who:
- Missed out on learning essential ICT skills in the past
- May have experienced learning difficulties
- Wish to access and/or progress into education
- Wish to confirm competence in ICT
- Are in a position to use ICT skills to facilitate and support other aspects of their individual learning programmes, including other basic skills and/or key skills.
Objectives
This course aims to enable learners to:
Use ICT effectively to function at work, and in society in general
Progress to the next level in small, manageable steps
Become better qualified
Achieve a nationally-recognised qualification
Entry Requirements:
There are no entry requirements.
Course Structure
This course is available at Entry Levels 1, 2, and 3.
Entry Level 1
Unit 1: Using ICT Systems
The learners will be able to:
- Use ICT Systems (eg a computer, onscreen information point, cashpoint, mobile) for a purpose (eg enter a password, PIN, use Learning Software)
Recognise and use interface features (eg icon, option button) - Health and Safety
Unit 2: Finding & Exchanging Information
The learners will be able to:
- Recognise sources of Information (eg information point, Kiosk, poster, newspaper , Text message)
- Get simple information from an ICT based source (eg read a text message, on-screen information)
- Receive ICT based communication (eg email, text message, phone call)
Unit 3: Developing & Presenting Information
The learners will be able to:
- Enter and edit (delete re-enter) simple information (eg name, PIN
- Identify and correct simple errors (eg incorrect PIN, wrong button press)
- Submit information (eg confirm choice, press enter key)
Entry Level 2
Unit 1: Using ICT Systems
The learners will be able to:
- Use hardware (eg keyboard, screen, printer, point and click device eg mouse) and software applications (eg Word processing, email)
- Recognise and use interface features (window, icon, menu) - Health and Safety - Keep access information (eg Password, PIN) secure
Unit 2: Finding & Exchanging Information
The learners will be able to:
- Recognise and use appropriate sources of information (ICT based, eg, CD, DVDm text message)
- Find information from ICT-based sources using appropriate facilities (eg menu, contents list, index, follow links)
- Use ICT (eg text message, email) to communicate
Unit 3: Developing & Presenting Information
The learners will be able to:
- Enter (eg list, diary entry, text message email reply) and edit (insert, delete) information
- Check content and correct errors (eg missing words, typing errors)
- Present Information (eg in hard copy, display)
Entry Level 3
Unit 1: Using ICT Systems
The learners will be able to:
- Use correct procedures to start, shutdown ICT systems and to open, close applications
- Use hardware (eg input devices, output devices), software applications (eg word processing) and help facilities
- Recognise and use interface features (eg move, resize, drag and drop)
- Work with new files (eg new, open, save) to enable storage and retrieval of information
- Insert and remove media (eg CD, DVD)
- Follow health & safety procedures
- Keep access information (eg PIN, password)
Unit 2: Finding & Exchanging Information
The learners will be able to:
- Recognise and use appropriate sources of information (ICT based, eg, CD, DVDm text message)
- Use internet sources (eg web addresses, following links)
- Use appropriate search techniques (eg menu, contents list)
- Select and use information (eg write down, copy and paste, play streamed media files eg audio, video games)
- Access, read and respond appropriately to email (eg open mail box, read, delete, reply)
Unit 3: Developing & Presenting Information
The learners will be able to:
- Enter (eg email, write a letter) and edit (eg insert, delete, copy and paste) information - Align text (eg Left, centre, right)
- Format text (eg Font Arial, size and style eg bold, italic) - Insert and position images (eg clip art, photo)

- Enter numbers (eg list of numbers) - Check meaning and accuracy, using spell check
- Create documents by bringing together information (eg picture with caption) information
How the Learner’s achievement will be assessed
The learners assessments are made up of a number of activities at each of
Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3. These include at least one on-screen skills-based activity, at least one on-screen knowledge-based activity and at least one centre-marked task based activity. At each Entry sub-level, the learner must undertake at least one of each of these types of assessed activity.
All of the activities are externally set by Edexcel Examination Board and conducted by Central Birmingham College Education and Training.
Progression opportunities.
A successful completion of the Entry 3 Certificate in Adult ICT will enable learners to progress onto Level 1 Key Skills in ICT, or to an ICT qualification such as AiDA (the Award in Digital Applications).
