Aims and Objectives
The qualification aims to:
- provide a nationally recognised qualification in drug awareness at an introductory level
- introduce quality control and measurable standards into basic drug awareness education
- provide an accessible and flexible learning opportunity for a wide range of individuals
The objectives of the qualification are to help candidates to:
- show an awareness of the types of drugs and why they are used
- show an awareness of the social and personal effects of drug use and how these are commonly portrayed
- show an awareness of society’s perceptions of, and responses to, drug use
Target Group
The qualification is appropriate for the widest possible range of target groups, from school and college students to those with an interest in raising their own understanding of issues related to drug use in society.
Entry Guidance
The minimum entry age for this qualification is 16. There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. Access to this
qualification is open to all candidates; however, a basic level of numeracy and literacy is required to comply with the Health and Safety and assessment aspects of the qualification. There are no restrictions on candidate entry for this qualification.
The NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Drug Awareness aims to provide progression towards:
- NVQs at Level 2 in Health and Social Care
- Other Level 2 qualifications in Health and Social Care

NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Drug Awareness Studies and their Applications
Aims and Objectives
The qualification aims to:
- provide a nationally recognised qualification in drug awareness at an intermediate level
- introduce quality control and measurable standards in drug awareness education
- provide an accessible and flexible learning opportunity for a wide range of individuals
The objectives of the qualification are to help candidates to:
- understand drug use/misuse
- recognise and respond to drug use/misuse
- communicate with young people about drugs
- work with communities
- understand solvents and volatile substance abuse
- show awareness of issues concerning alcohol use/misuse- consider blood- borne infections related to drug use/misuse Applications

Target Group
This qualification is appropriate for the widest possible range of learners, from the general public through to those working with substance misusers, who wish to gain a broad and objective understanding of the causes and consequences of substance misuse. More specifically, this qualification will be of great interest to those working or volunteering in a variety of fields who may come into contact with those involved in, or affected by, substance misuse. It is therefore useful to those who need general background knowledge or as a progression route for those who wish to work in a more specialized substance misuse role.
Entry Guidance
Learners should be at least 16 years of age and have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy necessary to comply with the Health and Safety aspects of the qualification and the completion of evidence requirements. There are no other restrictions on learner entry for this qualification.
Progression Opportunities
The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Drug Awareness Studies and their Applications aims to provide progression towards:
- NVQs at Level 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care
- other Level 2 and 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care
